I.D. redesignThe January/February 2004 issue of International Design Magazine (I.D. Mag) sports a complete makeover. Exit the Bruce Mau look (too 90's), enter the sleek 80's look of the FTP folder.
Current art director Nico Schweizer has reorganised the sections of the magazines to what seems to follow the logic of a folder tree. /contents presents the new Departments: /letter, /editor's note, /expo, /q+a, /rant, /r+d, /n+n, /scape, /crit, /flashback.
...and I really like it! Each page is clearly titled, the tree even goes down to the sub-folder level in some sections, and flipping through the magazine it seems easier than ever before to quickly identify which pages are adverts and which ones are actual content thanks to the big /(insert Department name here) tags at their tops.
One would have expected Wired Magazine to follow that path if any, but I.D. Magazine's choice is elegant, refreshing (who thought that FTP folder trees could be refreshing) and very usable.

Can't wait to read some of the readers' letters in the March issue (which came out already... but by the time it reaches Japan...) So if you want to share them in the comments below, please do so!

If you have seen some kind of web-like layout in other publications, please let us know by sending us an email using the link at the top left of this site. Thank you.

Update: Thank you Brendan Young for the /letters of the March/April 2004 issue. Unfortunately, there were little or no mention of the redesign. So get at it in the comments!

Hmm...so is this strictly a 'web look and feel' approach being plastered on paper, or is it more of a rethinking of how people browse magazines? Being ID, I'd say it's the latter. Must sneak out to the newstand today to look at this some more...

Julie Lasky, I.D.'s Editor-in-chief told me today by email that they saw the department-head style as an organizational tool, but that there was no denying the internet flavor.
