Sorry if this is an ignorant statement! Can't wait to visit this beautiful country. I lived in both Recife 9 years and Natal 2 years , both places fantastic. In a way, Recife is a beach city like Salvador , only Salvador is more touristy, probably a bit more party scene, and very historical. Natal is a mini-Recife. I had great times living in both cities, but if you are just passing thru for a few days you might want to skip both and fly to Fernando de Noronha island, about a 45 minute flight from either Recife or Natal.
It's worth pointing out that you get to visit nearby Olinda if you do go to Recife. Fortaleza is great and you'll need some time to get out to the beaches outside the city. Is it just for 1 person? A half-carton of heavy cream and slab of butter is a loooooooooooot of calories. As a fellow calorie-counter, everything in moderation!
